Postural Back Pain

Sitting for extended periods of time may be causing strain to your lower back. Postural back pain is a generic term for lower back pain caused by poor body position. This condition is also commonly described as mechanical low back pain.

What is postural back pain?

Postural back pain is pain in muscles, joints, or other soft tissue structures of the lower back due to the strain of poor body position. This pain presents absent of specific injury, accident, trauma, or pathology. This back pain can come from trigger points (“knots”) in muscles, joint fixation and irritation, or muscle strain or muscle tightness from sitting for extended periods of time.

Symptoms of postural back pain

Gamers affected by postural back pain will experience aching or discomfort anywhere in the lower back region. Most commonly, a feeling of tightness, stiffness, and aching pain are noted throughout the lower back, pelvis, or hips. These symptoms will likely become worse while gaming or with prolonged sitting, standing, or even sleeping. Generally, this pain will be less intense with activity, movement, and heat to the region.

Note: radiating symptoms into the gluteal region, legs, or feet (including pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness) are potential signs of nerve irritation. These symptoms are not associated with simple postural back pain, and if these symptoms are noted, you should consult your doctor.

Treatment & prevention

Proper ergonomics (body position), strengthening exercises, stretching, and other therapeutic exercises are effective in the treatment and resolution of this condition. Following resolution, continuation of these protocols allows for prevention of postural back pain.
